Breaking Report: John Bolton Set To Plead Guilty In Classified Documents Case

Former National Security Adviser John Bolton is reportedly preparing to plead guilty in a federal case involving the mishandling of classified materials, according to CNN, which cited anonymous sources familiar with the matter.

The report states that Bolton has agreed to pay a fine exceeding $2 million and will plead guilty to one count of illegally retaining sensitive national security documents. One of CNN’s three sources told the outlet that the charge could carry a prison sentence of up to 60 months.

The development follows Bolton’s October 2025 indictment, when a federal grand jury charged him with 18 counts tied to the alleged mishandling of classified information.

Bolton, long known for his aggressive foreign policy views, served as national security adviser during President Donald J. Trump’s first term from April 2018 to September 2019. After leaving the administration, Bolton became one of Trump’s most visible critics, frequently attacking the President despite having once held a senior national security role in his White House.

The reported guilty plea is likely to reignite debate over Washington’s long-running double standards on classified documents, accountability, and the treatment of high-profile political figures who operate inside the national security establishment.
