FBI Investigating Possible Senate Intelligence Committee Leaks
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has reportedly launched a major investigation into possible leaks of classified intelligence connected to Democratic members and staff on the Senate Intelligence Committee, according to multiple reports citing sources familiar with the inquiry.
The investigation reportedly originated from a criminal referral submitted by the National Security Agency involving the unauthorized disclosure of classified intelligence gathered through a sensitive overseas intercept.
According to reporting from Just The News, the leaked material surfaced publicly during the confirmation process for Tulsi Gabbard and involved an intercepted conversation between two Hezbollah-linked individuals discussing Gabbard’s controversial 2017 trip to Syria.
A report published by The New York Times suggested that references in the intercept to “the big guy” led some analysts to speculate Gabbard may have met with a senior Hezbollah leader during the trip.
Gabbard strongly denied those allegations.
Sources familiar with the matter reportedly said the NSA later determined that while the published report accurately referenced information contained within one of its classified intercepts, the conclusion suggesting Gabbard met directly with Hezbollah leadership was unsupported by the underlying intelligence.
Investigators then reportedly focused attention on Democratic staff members serving on the Senate Intelligence Committee who had access to the classified intercept before information from it appeared publicly in the media.
The criminal referral itself was reportedly submitted last summer but allegedly stalled inside the Justice Department for months before gaining traction.
According to the report, FBI Director Kash Patel only became aware of the matter several weeks ago, after which federal investigators significantly expanded the inquiry.
Since then, FBI counterintelligence teams and criminal investigators have reportedly widened the probe to examine additional leaks of classified information as well as communications between Senate committee staff and media organizations.
The investigation forms part of a broader crackdown by the Trump administration targeting unauthorized disclosures of classified intelligence and national security information.
Over the past 15 months, federal authorities have pursued multiple leak-related investigations involving former intelligence officials, government employees, and military personnel accused of improperly sharing sensitive information with reporters or outside individuals.

The Senate Intelligence Committee itself has faced controversy over leaks before.
In 2018, former Senate Intelligence Committee security director James Wolfe pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI during an investigation into unauthorized disclosures involving nonpublic information provided to a reporter.
At this stage, no criminal charges have been filed in the current investigation, and officials have not publicly indicated whether prosecutors intend to seek indictments.

Neither the FBI nor the Justice Department has publicly commented on the specifics of the inquiry.
Democratic members of the Senate Intelligence Committee also have not publicly responded to the allegations or reports surrounding the investigation.
The developing probe is likely to intensify already heated political battles in Washington surrounding classified intelligence, congressional oversight, leaks to the media, and allegations that intelligence agencies and lawmakers have improperly weaponized sensitive national security information for political purposes.
The investigation also arrives amid broader tensions between the Trump administration and Democratic lawmakers over intelligence operations, foreign policy, and the handling of classified information during previous administrations.
