GOP Rep Pushes For DOJ Investigation Into Soros Network Amid Political Violence
Republican Rep. Buddy Carter of Georgia is demanding that the Department of Justice open a sweeping investigation into billionaire George Soros’s vast web of political organizations, citing growing evidence that Soros-backed groups may be fueling violent left-wing extremism across the country.
In a Thursday letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi, Carter called for a “comprehensive and immediate” federal probe into Soros’s Open Society Foundations (OSF) and its network of affiliates, urging the DOJ to determine whether they are violating laws related to domestic terrorism, material support for violence, or the targeting of Americans based on their political beliefs.
“There is growing concern, based on credible reporting, that George Soros’ Open Society Foundations have played a significant role in funding organizations associated with promoting political extremism and engage in or endorse actions that meet the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s definition of domestic terrorism,” Carter wrote.
Carter, who is running to unseat Democrat Sen. Jon Ossoff in 2026, emphasized that “the funding of organizations that engage in, support, or incite political violence must not be tolerated.”
The Capital Research Center (CRC) recently published a detailed report documenting more than $80 million in Soros-directed funding toward groups allegedly tied to political violence and extremist activism. Among them:
- The Center for Third World Organizing (CTWO), which received $400,000 and boasted that it “threw down with people in the streets” during the 2020 George Floyd riots.
- The Ruckus Society, a radical training hub whose materials endorse “tactics that may be outside of the law.”
- The BlackOUT Collective, which helped co-author a pro-Hamas “Resistance Guide” glorifying the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks on Israel.
- Dream Defenders, which received $1.85 million from OSF.
- The Movement for Black Lives, awarded $18 million.
- Dissenters, a group linked to pro-Hamas propaganda, which received $200,000.
- The Sunrise Movement, granted at least $2 million, has championed the Stop Cop City/Defend the Atlanta Forest movement — a campaign federal officials say has ties to Antifa-linked anarchist cells.
Carter’s letter to the DOJ also cited the escalation of politically motivated violence from far-left groups, including attacks on ICE facilities and the Sept. 10 assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, allegedly carried out by a man motivated by hatred for Kirk’s political views.
While the Open Society Foundations denied wrongdoing, calling the accusations “politically motivated attacks on civil society,” Carter and other lawmakers argue that the evidence is overwhelming.
“Our activities are peaceful and lawful, and our grantees are expected to abide by human rights principles and comply with the law,” OSF said in a statement.
The statement, however, did little to ease concerns inside the Trump administration, which has already launched a broader effort to dismantle extremist funding networks.
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed Wednesday that the bureau is “following the money” behind Antifa and other far-left militant movements. Patel said the DOJ and Treasury Department are coordinating an unprecedented financial investigation aimed at mapping the donor web that sustains violent radical activism both inside and outside the United States.
“We are following the money. Money never lies,” Patel said during a joint briefing with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. “And that’s what it’s going to take to bring down this network of organized criminal thugs, gang bangers, and yes, domestic terrorists — because that’s what they are.”
As President Donald J. Trump’s administration continues its second-term crackdown on left-wing extremism, the Carter letter signals a new phase in the effort to expose how America’s most powerful leftist financiers may have quietly bankrolled the country’s growing domestic terror problem.
If even part of the CRC’s findings are verified, the investigation could represent a watershed moment — one that forces long-overdue accountability on the shadowy political operations that have fueled unrest from Portland to Atlanta.
