ISIS Terrorist Tries Killing Top Republican At Campaign Event - Police Rush In

ederal authorities have arrested a Texas teenager accused of preparing to assassinate Republican Congressman Keith Self and carry out a separate terrorist attack inspired by ISIS, disrupting what investigators reportedly believed could become a serious threat in North Texas.

The 17-year-old suspect, a resident of McKinney, was taken into FBI custody on October 5 after allegedly obtaining a firearm as part of his preparations.

According to federal law enforcement sources cited by local media, investigators believe the teenager had become radicalized through ISIS propaganda circulating online and was developing plans for politically motivated violence.

The alleged assassination attempt was reportedly scheduled to target Self during an October 17 public gathering in the McKinney area.

Investigators also suspected that the teenager was preparing another attack somewhere in North Texas on behalf of the Islamic State terrorist organization.

Authorities have not disclosed the precise location or intended victims of that second alleged operation, leaving important questions about the investigation unanswered.

Self, a Republican representing Texas’ 3rd Congressional District, confirmed that federal authorities had already detained the suspect before he learned of the danger.

“When we knew about it, they had him,” Self told CBS News Texas.

The congressman explained that U.S. Capitol Police informed his office about the suspected threat after the FBI had intervened, providing limited details about the investigation and the teenager’s reported intentions.

According to Self, investigators indicated that the suspect apparently wanted to generate attention through violence and may have intended to shoot the congressman before carrying out an additional terrorist act.

However, Self acknowledged that he did not know exactly how federal investigators uncovered the alleged scheme or what specific evidence they had collected.

He said his understanding was that authorities had been monitoring the teenager before deciding to make an arrest.

The Republican lawmaker expressed appreciation that federal agents acted before the alleged preparations escalated into an attack.

Self also sought to reassure constituents that neither he nor his family had been harmed and that his congressional responsibilities would continue.

“My family and I are safe,” Self said in a public statement addressing the incident.

The attempted targeting of Self has attracted particular attention because of his prominent criticism of radical Islamic extremism and his opposition to introducing Sharia law into the American legal system.

Together with fellow Republican Congressman Chip Roy, Self helped establish the Sharia-Free America Caucus, a congressional group focused on opposing efforts to incorporate Sharia principles into government institutions.

Self has also introduced a nonbinding resolution in the House of Representatives condemning Sharia law and opposing its implementation in the United States.

Those public positions have prompted questions about whether the suspect’s alleged ideological motivations were connected to the congressman’s political activities.

Self, however, declined to draw a definitive conclusion about why he was allegedly selected.

Although the reported ISIS connection could suggest an ideological motive, he emphasized that investigators had not provided enough information for him to determine the suspect’s intentions with certainty.

The incident highlights continuing concerns about online terrorist recruitment, particularly when extremist propaganda reaches young people who may be vulnerable to radicalization.

The Islamic State has long relied on digital communications and propaganda to encourage violence beyond territories where its operatives have maintained a physical presence.

In this case, law enforcement sources have described the suspect as recently radicalized, although the government has not publicly released detailed evidence explaining how the alleged process unfolded.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott responded Thursday by praising the FBI and other authorities involved in disrupting the suspected attack.

“The FBI stopped this radical Islamic terrorist before he could strike,” Abbott said in an official statement.

The governor also emphasized his administration’s commitment to confronting terrorism and coordinating with federal agencies to protect Texas residents.

His office confirmed that the Texas Department of Public Safety would continue assisting federal law enforcement in efforts to identify and prevent similar threats.

The arrest has also raised questions about security arrangements for elected officials campaigning ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.

Members of Congress frequently appear at public gatherings, town halls and campaign events where large crowds can create additional challenges for law enforcement.

Republican Congresswoman Beth Van Duyne, another member of the North Texas congressional delegation, acknowledged that threats against public officials have influenced her own security precautions.

Van Duyne told CBS News Texas that she had strengthened protective measures over recent months amid concerns about politically motivated violence.

She also noted that authorities had provided limited public information about the investigation involving Self.

The congresswoman’s comments reflected broader security concerns surrounding the safety of elected representatives, particularly during an election season requiring frequent public appearances.

Meanwhile, investigators have continued withholding the suspect’s identity because he is a minor.

The teenager remains in federal custody, and a judge will determine whether the case can proceed through adult prosecution.

Although reports indicate that the suspect was arrested after obtaining a firearm, federal officials have not publicly provided a comprehensive charging document outlining the evidence behind both alleged plots.

As a result, several significant details remain based on accounts from law enforcement sources rather than publicly available court findings.

Those unresolved questions include the precise nature of the alleged terrorist operation, the suspect’s intended targets beyond Self, and the extent of any communications with individuals connected to ISIS.

There has also been no public confirmation establishing that the teenager was acting under direct instructions from the terrorist organization rather than independently responding to its propaganda.

Self, who served 25 years in the U.S. Army and completed overseas deployments, indicated that the alleged threat would not prevent him from fulfilling his duties.

His military background, he explained, had familiarized him with dangerous situations, and he expressed confidence in the professionals responsible for protecting members of Congress.

The lawmaker also continued participating in campaign activities after learning about the arrest, maintaining that the incident would not determine his public schedule.

Self’s Democratic opponent, Evan Hunt, separately condemned the alleged plot, stressing that political disagreements cannot justify violence and that elected officials across party lines deserve protection.

For federal investigators, the case remains an active terrorism-related inquiry involving allegations against a juvenile suspect whose criminal responsibility has not yet been determined by a court.

No injuries have been reported, and authorities say the teenager remains detained as the investigation continues.

The FBI’s reported intervention came nearly two weeks before the alleged October 17 target date, preventing the suspected assassination plan from reaching the public event.

For Self, the arrest has reinforced his stated commitment to continuing his work in Congress despite threats directed at him.

The Republican lawmaker has maintained that intimidation will not alter his responsibilities to the residents of Texas’ 3rd Congressional District or his positions on national security and constitutional government.
