Kimmel Doubles Down On Melania ‘Expectant Widow’ Insult
Late-night comedian Jimmy Kimmel is facing mounting criticism after attempting to walk back a controversial joke aimed at First Lady Melania Trump—while simultaneously refusing to take responsibility for the outrage it sparked.
During Monday night’s opening monologue on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the host addressed backlash over his remark referring to Melania Trump as “an expectant widow.” Despite the timing—just days before a serious assassination threat targeting President Donald J. Trump—Kimmel insisted critics were overreacting.
“It was a very light roast joke about the fact that he’s almost 80 and she’s younger than I am,” Kimmel said. “It was not—by any stretch of the definition—a call to assassination.”
Rather than issue a clear apology, Kimmel framed himself as misunderstood, even joking about the backlash.
“You know how sometimes you wake up in the morning and the first lady puts out a statement demanding you be fired from your job?” Kimmel’s monologue began. “We’ve all been there, right?”
He doubled down further, continuing to mock the First Lady while dismissing concerns over the rhetoric.
“Obviously, it was a joke about their age difference and the look of joy we see on her face every time they’re together,” he said, adding that “they know that” was not a joke about “assassination” but Trump dying of old age.
Kimmel also attempted to pivot toward broader political commentary, suggesting that concerns over inflammatory language should start elsewhere.
“But I understand that the first lady had a stressful experience over the weekend, and probably every weekend is pretty stressful in that house,” he continued. “And also, I agree that hateful and violent rhetoric is something we should reject. I do, and I think a great place to start to dial that back would be to have a conversation with your husband about it.
“Donald Trump is allowed to say whatever he wants to say, as are you and as am I. Because under the First Amendment, we have, as Americans, a right to free speech,” he added.
While Kimmel did express sympathy for those present during the attempted attack at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, critics note that his tone remained flippant.
“Just because no one got killed doesn’t mean it wasn’t traumatic and scary, and we should come together,” he said. “We really should. But, if you want us to believe that a joke I made three days before this dinner had any effect on anything that happened, well then, maybe someone should look into this psychic lady too.”
The controversy comes in the wake of a deeply alarming security incident involving 31-year-old suspect Cole Allen, who allegedly attempted to carry out an attack during the high-profile event at the Washington Hilton.

According to the Department of Justice, Allen entered the venue armed with multiple weapons, including a 12-gauge shotgun and a Rock Island Armory 1911 pistol, allegedly intending to reach the ballroom where President Trump, Cabinet officials, and journalists were gathered.
Authorities say Allen had circulated a manifesto prior to the attempted attack, outlining his intent to target the President and members of his administration. The document reportedly contained extreme and false accusations against President Trump, along with explicit threats.
Allen now faces multiple federal charges, including attempted assassination of the President of the United States and firearms-related offenses. He made his initial court appearance Monday wearing a blue jail uniform.
In response to the incident—and the broader media climate surrounding it—President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have both called for Kimmel’s removal, arguing that reckless rhetoric in the entertainment industry contributes to a dangerous political environment.
The situation underscores growing concerns among conservatives about the normalization of hostile language toward public officials, particularly when it targets the sitting President and his family.
