Minneapolis Democrats Face Backlash After Memorial Day Posts Honoring George Floyd
Minneapolis Democrats ignited fierce criticism on Memorial Day after using the solemn holiday, traditionally reserved for honoring America’s fallen military heroes, to publicly commemorate George Floyd.
Mayor Jacob Frey, a Democrat, joined the City of Minneapolis’ official account on X in marking the anniversary of Floyd’s death, sparking outrage from conservatives who argued that the city’s priorities were deeply misplaced.
“Today, we remember George Floyd, who was murdered by a former Minneapolis police officer six years ago. That moment changed our city forever,” Frey wrote.

That moment changed our city forever.
Frey continued in a follow-up post, claiming that Floyd’s death “forced Minneapolis to confront painful truths about race, policing, inequity, and trust — and demanded hard conversations and accountability.”

Since Floyd’s murder, our city has been challenged not just to say we’ve changed, but to prove it.
The City of Minneapolis also echoed the mayor’s message, further fueling criticism from those who believed Memorial Day should have remained focused on the men and women who gave their lives in service to the United States.

Floyd died on May 25, 2020, while in Minneapolis police custody after officers responded to a complaint involving an allegedly counterfeit bill.
His death became one of the most politically consequential events of the decade, setting off nationwide riots, protests, corporate activism, police reform campaigns, and a sweeping cultural movement that reshaped American politics.
The official narrative has long held that Floyd died as a result of excessive force used by police. But conservatives have continued to challenge parts of that narrative, especially after later commentary and reporting raised questions about the medical and legal details surrounding the case.
In October 2023, Tucker Carlson addressed sworn testimony from an unrelated case and said “the whole George Floyd story was a lie.”
Carlson pointed to the autopsy discussion and highlighted claims that Floyd had not died from asphyxiation and had fentanyl in his system at the time of his death.
For many on the right, the controversy is not simply about Floyd’s death, but about the political mythology Democrats built around it. Conservatives argue that the left turned Floyd into a national symbol while ignoring his criminal history and the destructive unrest that followed in cities across America.
Floyd’s past has remained a central point of criticism among conservative commentators, including his record of prior offenses and a 2007 armed robbery case involving a pregnant woman.
That history is why many conservatives reacted sharply to Minneapolis officials appearing to elevate Floyd on Memorial Day, a holiday meant to honor service members who died defending the nation.
Conservative commentator Dinesh D’Souza directly criticized the city’s decision.
“He was a career criminal and a no-good bum. We need fewer, not more, people like him. Is it customary for Democrats to memorialize the worst elements in our society?” D’Souza wrote on X.

Other users on X joined the backlash, with one account calling the response to Frey’s post “easily one of the worst ratios in recent X history.”

And you wonder why people hate you so much.
Maybe you don't.
Truly despicable.

This is easily one of the worst ratios in recent X history, and there’s a very clear reason why:

Minneapolis didn’t “change forever” for the better. It got hit with a crime wave, business exodus, and hellish chaos that locals are still living with 6 years later.
The reaction underscored a broader cultural divide. To the left, Floyd remains a symbol of racial justice and police accountability. To many conservatives, however, his elevation represents a troubling pattern in which Democrats appear more eager to memorialize controversial figures than honor law enforcement, military service, public order, and innocent victims of crime.
That criticism became especially sharp because the posts came on Memorial Day.
For millions of Americans, Memorial Day is not a generic day of remembrance. It is a sacred national observance dedicated to those who wore the uniform and never came home. It is a day for Gold Star families, battlefield sacrifice, folded flags, and the price paid for liberty.
That Minneapolis Democrats chose that moment to center George Floyd was viewed by many critics as another example of the left’s distorted moral priorities.
Rather than preserving Memorial Day as a tribute to America’s fallen heroes, city leaders once again turned toward a politically charged symbol of the 2020 unrest. And for conservatives, that decision said everything about the modern Democratic Party’s view of crime, order, patriotism, and national memory.
