No Regrets: Black Voters Tell CNN They’d Back Trump Again

CNN faced an unexpected moment when it interviewed several Black voters who voiced firm support for former President Donald Trump.

During a segment aired on Anderson Cooper 360, Van Jones — a former Obama administration official — spoke with three voters from South Carolina. When he asked if they had any regrets about voting for Trump or if they'd make the same choice again, the responses were emphatic.

“One thousand percent, absolutely yes,” replied Kyasia Kraft, making it clear she would back Trump without hesitation.

Detra German echoed that sentiment. She noted that while she isn’t tied to any one political party, Trump still holds her support.

“Now, in the future, I am not a die-hard Democrat or die-hard Republican,” she explained. “If there were a Democratic candidate who was more aligned for me, then I would vote Democrat.”

Seth Dawkins, another voter interviewed, revealed that although he wasn’t always a Republican and comes from a “super Democratic” family, he would still vote for Trump again.

“For me, I like the border,” Dawkins stated. “I just don’t like the idea of someone coming here illegally and getting benefits that can serve my community. So that’s the reason why I support him on that border policy.”

Jones asked, “When you think about the border, you think about people coming here who are getting more help than people who live here, who are born here?”

Dawkins responded that his views were shaped not by traditional news but by social media: “I got that perspective not from news channels, I got it from social media. TikTok is like a holy grail. We even see it with the things that we learn about the United States government outside of the United States. People are showing Americans, hey, look at what’s going on. Do y’all know that your government is doing this? Have you seen this? Have you looked at it from this perspective?”

Kraft also shared her frustration with what she sees as inaction in the Black community. She said she is “sick and tired of seeing Black people sit there and complain about something,” without taking steps to make change.

In the 2020 election, Trump saw record-high support from Black male voters, with close to 24% casting ballots for him. New research suggests that support has surged.

According to a National Voter Trend (NVT) survey conducted by polling firm Cygnal, 42% of Black men now approve of Trump’s performance.

Brent Buchanan, Cygnal’s president, said the numbers reflect a shift in sentiment among key voter groups: “Throughout the election, we highlighted just how far out of touch Democrats had become with the American public, and now after Trump’s victory and rapid action on his campaign promises, it’s clear they haven’t learned much.”

He pointed to “ticked-off, young, diverse, working-class voters” as a critical force behind Trump’s edge over Kamala Harris, especially as white voter margins remained steady.

This increased support among Black men is part of a larger pattern of Democratic decline in key demographics. The survey also found only 40% of voters hold a favorable view of congressional Democrats, while 54% view them unfavorably.

Congressional Republicans, on the other hand, are nearly split, with 47% favorable and 48% unfavorable.

John Rogers, Cygnal’s Director of Client Strategy, said that Trump’s ability to address top voter concerns is a major reason for the shifting numbers.

The survey indicates that inflation and the economy remain top priorities for 32% of voters — and many credit Trump’s economic approach for the positive outlook.
