Obamas Share ‘Never Seen Before’ Photo
Former President Barack Obama is drawing renewed attention to both his political activism and his personal life after publicly acknowledging that his continued involvement in attacks against President Donald Trump has created “genuine tension” inside his marriage with former First Lady Michelle Obama.
The comments came just days before Obama posted a Mother’s Day tribute featuring a nostalgic family photo with Michelle and their daughters, Malia Obama and Sasha Obama.
“Wishing all the moms out there a wonderful Mother’s Day! To @MichelleObama, I’m grateful for all the ways you’ve shown up for our daughters and our family over the years. We love you,” Obama wrote alongside the image.
The photo appeared to date back to Obama’s early political career and showed him seated at a desk with Sasha sitting on his lap.
The social media post quickly reignited years of speculation and rumors surrounding the Obamas’ marriage, rumors the couple has repeatedly denied publicly despite continued media scrutiny and online speculation.
The renewed focus comes after Obama admitted during an interview with The New Yorker that his decision to remain heavily engaged in politics has strained his relationship with Michelle.
Obama said President Trump’s policies and political influence have forced him to stay more active politically than he originally intended after leaving office.
“She wants to see her husband easing up and spending more time with her, enjoying what remains of our lives,” Obama said about Michelle.
“It does create a genuine tension in our household, and it frustrates her,” he admitted.
Obama also defended his unusually active post-presidency political role by arguing that modern circumstances surrounding Trump justified his continued involvement.
“I’m more forgiving of it, in the sense that I understand why people feel that way, because people aren’t looking at me in historical comparison to other presidents,” Obama said.
“They don’t care about the fact that no other ex-president was the main surrogate for the Party for four election cycles after they left office,” he added.
Critics, however, argue Obama has remained deeply involved in partisan politics for years while simultaneously portraying himself publicly as above the political fray.
Although Obama claimed he has generally avoided directly attacking Trump by name since 2017, conservatives point to numerous speeches and public appearances widely viewed as thinly veiled criticisms of President Trump and his administration.
One of the most recent examples came during Obama’s remarks at the funeral of civil rights activist Jesse Jackson.
During the speech, Obama described America as facing assaults on democratic institutions, attacks on decency, and the celebration of greed, corruption, and ignorance — comments many observers interpreted as directed squarely at President Trump.
“We are living in a time when it can be hard to hope,” Obama said.
“Each day we wake up to some new assault on our democratic institutions, another setback to the idea of the rule of law, an offense to common decency,” he continued.
“Each day we’re told by those in high office to fear each other, and to turn on each other,” Obama added.
He also condemned what he described as “greed and bigotry being celebrated” along with “bullying and mockery masquerading as strength.”

Obama further criticized what he called attacks on science, expertise, and honesty.
“We see science and expertise denigrated, while ignorance and dishonesty, and cruelty, and corruption, are reaping untold rewards,” he said.
The speech drew criticism from conservatives who argued Obama used a funeral service to deliver a partisan political message targeting the sitting president.

Even Jesse Jackson Jr. reportedly rebuked Obama as well as former Presidents Bill Clinton and Joe Biden for turning the memorial event into a political platform.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump offered a notably more conciliatory public message regarding Jackson despite the longtime activist’s Democratic political ties.
Trump described Jackson as “a force of nature like few others before him.”
Obama’s comments and renewed political activism continue highlighting the increasingly visible divide between former Democratic presidents and the current Trump administration as political tensions remain extraordinarily high heading toward the 2026 midterm elections.
