Reporter Believe Marco Rubio Could Be 2028 GOP Frontrunner
Anti-Trump commentator Tim Miller believes a familiar name is maneuvering behind the scenes for a 2028 Republican presidential bid: Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Speaking on a podcast, Miller said Rubio appears to be shifting his political positions to align with President Donald Trump’s MAGA movement — a move he interprets as groundwork for a future campaign.
“Any signs of Vance or Rubio just, you know, preliminarily, possibly, potentially laying the groundwork for 2028?” the host asked Miller.
“I don’t possibly see how you could look at Marco Rubio’s behavior as anything other than an interest in 2028,” Miller replied. “I mean, he has changed his views to move towards MAGA on basically every relevant foreign policy issue.”
Miller noted that Rubio, long an advocate for those fleeing authoritarian regimes in Latin America, now appears to be moving away from those positions.
“He was a huge advocate for people fleeing communism, fleeing Venezuela, fleeing Nicaragua, fleeing Cuba throughout his whole career,” Miller said. “And now the Trump Administration is taking away protected status of those people that fled those countries to come to America, they shut down the Radio Martí, which is the free Cuba radio.”
He added, “Across the board, Marco has really, like, aligned himself with MAGA in a very ostentatious way. And I think that that’s obviously due to his political ambitions, I mean, in addition to wanting to stay in Trump’s good graces and I guess keep getting appointed to different temporary jobs, interim jobs.”
According to Miller, aligning with Trump is critical for Rubio to earn trust among MAGA voters, particularly after his 2016 primary run, where he was seen as ideologically and temperamentally distinct from Trump.
“Marco’s case, I think it does obviously helps, but I think it also helps him because, well, he was — you know, he ran for president in 2016 being very different from Donald Trump,” Miller said. “So if he was going to be somebody that wanted to carry the mantle for MAGA, he would need the endorsement and the support and the air cover of Trump and people in Trump’s family.”
Miller warned that Rubio’s pivot may be viewed with skepticism. “There’s going to be some out there who try to say this is fake, and I think they have a lot of evidence for making the argument that Marco’s transition is phony and that he might not be able to be trusted,” he said. “Obviously, Tucker Carlson went hard at Marco when he was on the list for VP.”
President Trump himself recently mentioned both Vice President JD Vance and Secretary Rubio when asked about potential successors in a Meet the Press interview.
When questioned about the 2028 race, Trump responded: “It’s far too early to say that. But you know, I do have a vice president … and JD’s doing a fantastic job. I don’t want to get involved in that. I think he’s a fantastic, brilliant guy. Marco is great. There’s a lot of them that are great.”
“We have a lot of good people in this party,” he added.
Although Trump has previously joked about running for a third term, he reiterated he isn’t serious about it. “So many people want me to do it. I have never had requests so strong as that. But it’s something that, to the best of my knowledge, you’re not allowed to do,” Trump acknowledged.
“I’ll be an eight-year president. I’ll be a two-term president. I always thought that was very important,” he concluded. “This is not something I’m looking to do. I’m looking to have four great years and turn it over to somebody, ideally a great Republican.”
