Trump Delivers Bold Message To China’s Xi During Face-to-Face Meeting

President Donald Trump told Chinese President Xi Jinping during a face-to-face meeting Thursday that he was “honored” to call the Chinese leader his friend as both nations opened what many are calling one of the most important diplomatic summits in modern history.

The high-profile meeting in Beijing comes amid escalating global tensions involving trade, artificial intelligence, Taiwan, Iran, and the future balance of economic and military power between the United States and China.

Speaking during public remarks alongside Xi, President Trump emphasized the enormous global significance of the summit.

“I really look very much forward to our discussions, it’s a big discussion. There are those that say this is maybe the biggest summit ever, they can never remember anything like it,” Trump said in remarks later circulated widely online.

“I can say, in the United States, people aren’t talking about anything else,” the president continued.

“But, it’s an honor to be with you, it’s an honor to be your friend, and the relationship between China and the USA is going to be better than ever before. Thank you very much,” Trump added.

The summit has also focused heavily on economics and trade cooperation between the world’s two largest economies.

According to China’s state-backed Xinhua News Agency, Xi assured American business leaders accompanying President Trump that China intends to expand access for U.S. companies and remain open to foreign investment.

“Xi said that U.S. companies are deeply involved in China’s reform and opening up, and both sides have benefited from this,” the report stated.

“Noting that China’s door will only open wider, Xi said China welcomes the United States to enhance mutually beneficial cooperation with China and expressed belief that U.S. companies will enjoy even broader prospects in China,” the report added.

Several of America’s most influential technology executives traveled to Beijing alongside President Trump.

Among them were Elon Musk, Jensen Huang, and Tim Cook.

President Trump reportedly introduced each executive personally to Xi during meetings surrounding the summit.

“The U.S. entrepreneurs said that they attach great importance to the Chinese market, and hope to deepen their business operations in China and strengthen cooperation with China,” Xinhua reported.

The White House also highlighted discussions involving expanded economic cooperation and improved market access for American companies operating inside China.

In a statement posted on X, the White House said both countries discussed “ways to enhance economic cooperation between countries, including expanding market access for American businesses into China and increasing Chinese investment.”

George Chen said Xi’s comments send an important message to international investors watching China’s slowing economy.

“Xi’s comments are a strong statement to world companies to continue to invest in China,” Chen said.

“I think the statement Xi made about opening up is not just for propaganda. China does need to remain attractive for foreign investments,” he added.

During additional remarks at the summit, President Trump framed the gathering as a unique meeting between the world’s most powerful political and business leaders.

“I brought the 30 most powerful business leaders on the planet to these talks… and they all said yes. I didn’t send the second-in-command or the vice president,” Trump said.

“I wanted the number one from each empire! Jensen Huang, Tim Cook, Elon Musk, and the other titans… the best in the world are here, right in front of you,” he continued.

“They’re here today to pay respect to you and to China. They come hungry to do business, invest, and create. From our side, it’ll be 100% reciprocal,” Trump added.

The summit also reportedly included major discussions involving Iran and global energy security.

According to reports, both Trump and Xi agreed that Iran must not obtain a nuclear weapon and that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open to global shipping traffic.

Speaking Thursday morning on Fox & Friends, co-host Brian Kilmeade argued the growing cooperation between Washington and Beijing could create major problems for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“It looks like he’s [Trump] saying, ‘We’re the two leaders, let’s find a way to get along.’ You know who’s having a really bad day and week or two weeks? Vladimir Putin,” Kilmeade said.

The summit continues as both countries attempt to navigate an increasingly fragile global environment while balancing economic competition, national security concerns, and the future direction of international diplomacy.
