US Border Patrol Chief Mike Banks Abruptly Resigns
A second high-ranking official inside President Donald Trump’s administration has abruptly resigned this week, adding to a series of major leadership changes across federal agencies.
Mike Banks confirmed Wednesday that he is stepping down immediately as chief of the U.S. Border Patrol after nearly four decades in law enforcement and border security.
Speaking with Bill Melugin of Fox News, Banks said the decision came after helping restore order to what he described as a historically chaotic border situation.
“It’s just time,” Banks told Fox News.
“I feel like I got the ship back on course from the least secure, most disastrous, chaotic border to the most secure border this country has ever seen. Time to pass the reins; 37 years, it’s time to enjoy the family and life,” he added.
Banks’ departure comes only days after Marty Makary resigned as commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration amid growing internal tensions over health policy direction inside the administration.

According to reports, Makary’s resignation followed increasing frustration among pro-life activists and some Trump allies over the pace of changes involving abortion policy and broader “Make America Healthy Again” initiatives.
A White House official told Fox News Digital that Makary’s departure stemmed from broader “process at the FDA” issues rather than any single disagreement.
The official insisted there was “no bad blood” between President Trump and Makary.
Reports also indicated that Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. pushed for leadership changes as dissatisfaction inside the agency intensified.
Kyle Diamantas, the FDA’s deputy commissioner for food, will reportedly serve as acting commissioner while the administration searches for a permanent replacement.
The leadership changes unfolded while President Trump continues his high-profile diplomatic visit to China, where trade, Iran, artificial intelligence, and global security dominate discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
During a formal state dinner in Beijing, President Trump delivered extensive remarks emphasizing the importance of cooperation between the United States and China.
Trump described the U.S.-China relationship as “one of the most consequential relationships in world history.”
“From the beginning, our citizens have shared a deep sense of mutual respect. Founding Father Benjamin Franklin published The Sayings of Confucius in his colonial newspaper and today a sculpture recognizing that ancient Chinese sage is carved into the face of the United States Supreme Court very proudly,” Trump said.
The president also highlighted historical and cultural ties between both countries, including the contributions of Chinese immigrants to America’s railroads and the popularity of American exports inside China.
“We value courage and achievement. We love our families, and we love our countries. Together, we have the chance to draw on these values, to create a future of greater prosperity, cooperation and happiness and peace for our children,” Trump said.
“We love our children. This region and the world is a special world with the two of us united and together,” he added.
Xi also delivered remarks stressing the importance of maintaining stable relations between the world’s two largest economies despite ongoing geopolitical tensions.
“Today, President Trump and I had in-depth exchanges on China-U.S. relations and the international and regional dynamics. We both believe that the China-U.S. relationship is the most important bilateral relationship in the world. We must make it work and never mess it up,” Xi said through a translator.
“Both China and the United States stand to gain from cooperation and lose from confrontation. Our two countries should be partners rather than rivals,” Xi continued.
“President Trump and I also agreed to build a constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability to promote the steady, sound and sustainable development of China-U.S. relations and bring more peace, prosperity and progress to the world,” Xi added.
Xi also warned about increasing global instability while emphasizing the worldwide significance of relations between Washington and Beijing.
“Looking back at the course of China-U.S. relations, whether or not we could have mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation is the key to whether the relationship can advance steadily. The world today is changing and turbulent,” Xi said.
“China-U.S. relations concern the well-being of the over 1.7 billion people of both countries and affect the interests of the over 8 billion people of the world,” he added.
The developments highlight the administration’s attempt to simultaneously manage major personnel changes at home while navigating increasingly complex diplomatic and geopolitical challenges abroad.
