Trump Links Hakeem Jeffries to WHCD Shooting, Wants Him Charged

President Donald Trump sharply condemned House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on Thursday, accusing the New York Democrat of contributing to the increasingly hostile political climate that conservatives say has fueled violence against Republicans and public officials.

Writing on Truth Social, President Trump connected Jeffries’ rhetoric to broader political extremism following last month’s assassination attempt against him during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

“This lunatic, Hakeem ‘Low IQ’ Jeffries, should be charged with INCITING VIOLENCE! The Radical Left Democrats actually want to Destroy our Country,” Trump wrote.

The president’s comments came after Jeffries defended his earlier remarks calling for “maximum warfare” against Republicans and the Trump administration — language that has drawn sharp criticism from conservatives who argue Democratic leaders are normalizing dangerous political rhetoric.

“I stand by it,” Jeffries told Axios when asked about the backlash. He dismissed criticism from Republicans, referring to it as attacks from “phony Republicans.”

“You can continue to criticize me for it. I don’t give a damn about the criticism … get lost,” Jeffries added following the assassination attempt against Trump.

Republicans quickly condemned the remarks.

“So-called Hakeem Jeffries is a disgrace to the United States Congress,” Florida Congressman Randy Fine wrote on X.

“He is deranged, disgusting and violent. It is unacceptable that House Democrats continue to remain silent in the aftermath of his call for ‘maximum warfare, everywhere, all the time’ against Republicans. Their casual acceptance of hateful and divisive language enables this out-of-control behavior,” Fine continued.

Indiana Senator Jim Banks also accused Democrats of fueling political extremism through inflammatory rhetoric.

“Violent rhetoric has taken over the mainstream Democrat Party. The Left’s incendiary language, from Jasmine Crockett to Hakeem Jeffries, is fueling the political violence we are seeing. It’s sick, dangerous, and irresponsible,” Banks said.

The controversy comes as the federal court system continues handling the aftermath of last month’s attempted attack at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner — one of Washington’s most high-profile annual political gatherings attended by journalists, lawmakers, and administration officials.

During a hearing Monday, U.S. Magistrate Judge Zia Faruqui sharply criticized the treatment of the suspect accused in the case, identified as Cole Allen.

Faruqui said the court has a responsibility to ensure that pretrial detainees are treated lawfully and humanely while awaiting trial.

“It’s the court’s job when recommending detention to ensure it’s done in a responsible and safe way,” Faruqui said during the hearing.

The judge went further, apologizing directly to Allen over the conditions of his confinement and expressing concern that jail officials may have imposed excessively punitive restrictions.

Allen has reportedly been held under highly restrictive conditions inside the Washington, D.C., jail system, including placement in a padded cell with near-constant monitoring and severely limited access to phone calls, reading materials, and recreational activity.

Faruqui questioned whether the restrictions exceeded what would normally be considered standard pretrial detention procedures.

According to court discussions, officials from the D.C. Department of Corrections argued the measures were implemented primarily for Allen’s own protection rather than as punishment.

Authorities pointed to statements Allen allegedly made after his arrest suggesting he did not expect to survive the incident, which officials said prompted concerns about possible self-harm and led to suicide-watch protocols.

However, Faruqui noted that medical professionals had not fully supported those conclusions and questioned whether the restrictions were based on appropriate clinical evaluations.

The broader political debate surrounding the case continues intensifying as Republicans increasingly warn that escalating rhetoric from Democratic leaders and activist groups is creating a climate where political violence is becoming normalized.

Conservatives have also pointed to repeated attacks against Supreme Court justices, threats against President Trump, and recent assassination attempts as evidence that the nation’s political discourse has entered dangerous territory.
