Trump Rips Mamdani’s ‘Very Angry’ Speech, Warns Communism ‘Has Never Worked Anywhere’

President Donald J. Trump is warning that New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s radical socialist agenda is “doomed to fail,” calling the newly elected mayor’s fiery victory speech “very angry” and “deeply disrespectful.”

During an interview on Special Report with Bret Baier, the President weighed in on the latest election results, which saw Democrats claim several key victories, including Mamdani’s win over former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.

Trump, who has long criticized the spread of socialism in American politics, said Mamdani’s tone on election night revealed more about his ideology than his leadership.

“I thought it was a very angry speech,” Trump said. “Certainly angry toward me, and I think he should be very nice to me. You know, I’m the one that sort of has to approve a lot of things coming to him, so he’s off to a bad start.”

Despite the friction, Trump said he hopes Mamdani succeeds for the sake of New York City — but warned that his socialist economic vision would collapse under its own weight.

“Look, for a thousand years, communism has not worked,” Trump said. “It’s just communism, or the concept of communism, has not worked. I tend to doubt it’s going to work this time. It’s literally never worked.”

A Radical Platform for America’s Largest City

Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist backed by the Democratic Socialists of America, ran on a platform promising sweeping rent controls, higher corporate taxes, and major cuts to police funding. His election marks the first time a DSA-aligned candidate will lead New York City — a shift conservatives say could turn the nation’s largest metropolis into a laboratory for failed left-wing policies.

Trump warned that Mamdani’s combative rhetoric could backfire, damaging the city’s working relationship with Washington.

“I’d like for him to do well because I love New York,” the President said. “But he should be respectful of the federal government. He’s got to work with us.”

Turning to the ongoing government shutdown, now in its sixth week, Trump said Democrats have become “radicalized” and are refusing to negotiate in good faith.

“They always extend the deadline in past shutdowns,” he said. “You know, an extension is very easy. It’s done all the time. You extend, sometimes you extend four or five times. They just become radical, radicalized lunatics actually, in a true sense. They should automatically extend, and we will make a deal as soon as they do.”

The President said he remains confident that an agreement can be reached once Democrats return to the table.

“We will make a deal as soon as Democrats extend,” Trump said.

Trump also reiterated his call to abolish the Senate filibuster, a rule requiring 60 votes for most legislation, arguing that it prevents Congress from passing “commonsense” reforms.

“I think that if we got rid of the filibuster, we would approve so many good things, wonderful things, that it would be hard to beat us,” he said.

In a rare show of outreach, Trump said he’s open to working with Democrats on health care reform, provided they’re serious about fixing the failures of Obamacare.

“We ought to work on health care together because Obamacare has been a disaster,” he said. “It’s going to get a big increase, but Obamacare is not great health care, and it’s very expensive. I’d love to work with them to fix it.”

Trump’s rebuke of Mamdani comes amid growing tension between the White House and the Democratic Party’s far-left wing — a movement celebrating Mamdani’s win as proof that socialism can triumph in America’s biggest cities. But for Trump and millions of conservatives, it’s a warning sign of what happens when radical ideology overtakes common sense.
