Trump Says Trade Talks With China Back On, Will Take Place In London

President Donald J. Trump has once again taken the reins of global diplomacy, announcing a major round of trade talks with Chinese officials set to take place in London—just days after a disturbing agroterrorism threat tied to Chinese nationals raised new alarms across Washington.

In a statement issued Friday, President Trump revealed that top members of his administration will engage in direct negotiations with Chinese representatives beginning Monday, June 9.

“I am pleased to announce that Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and United States Trade Representative, Ambassador Jamieson Greer, will be meeting in London on Monday, June 9, 2025, with Representatives of China, with reference to the Trade Deal. The meeting should go very well. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” the president stated.

The announcement followed a lengthy call between President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, during which the two leaders discussed the trajectory of their trade agreement.

“I just concluded a very good phone call with President Xi, of China, discussing some of the intricacies of our recently made, and agreed to, Trade Deal,” Trump said. He described the 90-minute conversation as producing a “very positive conclusion for both Countries.”

While the tone appeared optimistic, the president didn’t shy away from calling out China’s bad-faith behavior.

“I like President XI of China, always have, and always will, but he is VERY TOUGH, AND EXTREMELY HARD TO MAKE A DEAL WITH!!!” Trump posted on Truth Social.

“I made a FAST DEAL with China in order to save them from what I thought was going to be a very bad situation, and I didn’t want to see that happen. Because of this deal, everything quickly stabilized and China got back to business as usual. Everybody was happy! That is the good news!”

“The bad news is that China, perhaps not surprisingly to some, HAS TOTALLY VIOLATED ITS AGREEMENT WITH US. So much for being Mr. NICE GUY!”

This warning comes as tensions with the Chinese Communist Party continue to rise—this time not just over trade, but national security.

On Tuesday, federal authorities revealed that two Chinese nationals, both linked to Beijing’s state-run research system, are facing serious charges for allegedly smuggling a highly dangerous biological pathogen into the U.S. — a fungus that poses a catastrophic threat to America’s food supply.

Yunqing Jian, 33, and Zunyong Liu, 34, were arrested and charged with multiple crimes including conspiracy, smuggling, false statements, and visa fraud. They are accused of bringing Fusarium graminearum, a fungus known to destroy crops like wheat, rice, corn, and barley, into the U.S.—a potential act of biological sabotage.

U.S. Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon Jr. called the incident one of grave national concern:

“The alleged actions of these Chinese nationals — including a loyal member of the Chinese Communist Party — are of the gravest national security concerns,” Gorgon said. “These two aliens have been charged with smuggling a fungus that has been described as a ‘potential agroterrorism weapon’ into the heartland of America.”

Court records reveal one suspect concealed samples in his backpack while entering the country. An FBI affidavit stated the pair planned to research the pathogen at the University of Michigan, though the purpose and scope remain unclear. Yunqing Jian reportedly received Chinese government funding for his work on the fungus while in China.

FBI Director Kash Patel didn’t mince words:

“I can confirm that the FBI arrested a Chinese national within the United States who allegedly smuggled a dangerous biological pathogen into the country,” Patel said on X.

“… This fungus can cause a disease called ‘head blight,’ a disease of wheat, barley, maize, and rice, causing significant health issues in both humans and livestock. It is responsible for billions of dollars in economic losses worldwide each year.”
