Trump Threatens to Declare National Emergency After DC Mayor Caves to 'Pressure from the Radical Left'
President Donald J. Trump is signaling he may once again declare a national emergency in Washington, D.C., after Mayor Muriel Bowser abruptly reversed course and announced the city’s police force would no longer cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
Bowser’s about-face comes after weeks of working alongside the Trump administration to restore law and order to the nation’s capital — a partnership that had shown remarkable results. Yet, facing political pressure from her Democratic allies, the mayor told reporters that the Metropolitan Police Department will cut ties with federal immigration enforcement.
“Immigration enforcement is not what MPD does,” Bowser said, according to local outlet WUSA. “And with the end of the emergency, it won’t be what MPD does in the future.”
The reversal infuriated President Trump, who took to Truth Social early Monday morning to issue a scathing rebuke.

“The Federal Government, under my auspices as President of the United States of America, has stepped into the complete criminal mess that was Washington, D.C., our Nation’s Capital,” Trump wrote.
“Because of this, D.C. has gone from one of the most dangerous and murder ridden cities in the U.S.A., and even around the World, to one of the safest – In just a few weeks. The ‘place’ is absolutely booming, with restaurants, stores, and businesses packed and, for the first time in decades, virtually NO CRIME,” the president added.
But Trump warned that Bowser’s sudden reversal, driven by “Radical Left Democrats,” threatened to undo the progress.
“Under pressure from the Radical Left Democrats, Mayor Muriel Bowser, who has presided over this violent criminal takeover of our Capital for years, has informed the Federal Government that the Metropolitan Police Department will no longer cooperate with ICE in removing and relocating dangerous illegal aliens,” Trump continued.
“If I allowed this to happen, CRIME would come roaring back. To the people and businesses of Washington, D.C., DON’T WORRY, I AM WITH YOU, AND WON’T ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN. I’ll call a National Emergency, and Federalize, if necessary!!!” he declared.
The warning comes just days after Trump’s 30-day D.C. emergency crackdown, invoked under Section 740 of the Home Rule Act, expired when Congress chose not to extend it. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said no extension was needed, while the White House had not formally requested one.
Initially, Bowser had earned rare praise from both the president and White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt after she signed a “Mayor’s Order” pledging to continue cooperation with federal authorities. That goodwill, however, appears to have collapsed with her latest announcement.
The Trump Administration is grateful to continue partnering with Mayor Bowser to make DC the safest city in the country.

While ICE agents will remain active in the city, they will now do so without the support of local police — a move critics warn will undermine security and handcuff federal authorities trying to protect the capital.
President Trump has made it clear: if D.C. Democrats refuse to keep their city safe, he is prepared to step in once again.
