Comer Suggests Subpoena As Questions Swirl Around Ilhan Omar’s Family Wealth
Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., is facing renewed scrutiny over her family’s reported wealth as Minnesota remains mired in a series of high-profile fraud investigations involving taxpayer-funded government programs.
House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., confirmed this week that committee attorneys are weighing whether to issue a subpoena to Omar’s husband, Tim Mynett, over questions surrounding his business dealings, Breitbart News reported.
In comments to the New York Post, Comer said investigators are trying to determine how Omar and Mynett’s net worth allegedly surged from relatively modest means to as much as $30 million in a short span of time.
“We’re going to get answers, whether it’s through the Ethics Committee or the Oversight Committee, one of the two,” Comer said.
Omar has previously rejected claims about sudden wealth. In 2025, she publicly denied reports that she was worth millions of dollars, accusing conservatives of politically motivated attacks, according to Breitbart News.
Comer, however, said the financial timeline surrounding Mynett’s rise is difficult to reconcile with normal investment activity.
“There are a lot of questions as to how her husband accumulated so much wealth over the past two years,” Comer told the Post. “It’s not possible. It’s not. I’m a money guy. It’s not possible.”
Speaking separately with investigative journalist Catherine Herridge, Comer said Omar’s reported net worth appeared to have “just out of nowhere skyrocketed.”
According to Comer, congressional investigators believe the growth may be connected to two investment funds operated by Mynett.
“We have a lot of questions about where the money came from, how do you make that much in fees in a short period of time,” Comer said.
The New York Post also cited a law enforcement source indicating that investigators are examining whether any elected officials may be linked to Minnesota’s broader network of alleged fraud schemes.
Minnesota has come under intense scrutiny following multiple cases involving abuse of welfare and aid programs funded by taxpayers. Breitbart News reported that fraud cases in the state now total more than $1 billion in stolen public funds.

Her household net worth reportedly surged from near-negative in 2019 to as much as $30M today—mostly tied to her husband's venture capital firm and winery exploding in value overnight.

As those cases unfolded, questions emerged about what Omar may have known and when she knew it. Reports have pointed to her professional and personal connections to organizations, businesses, and individuals later implicated in investigations.

That is a 66,676% increase since 2019.

One frequently cited example is Safari Restaurant in Minneapolis, where Omar has held political events. The restaurant’s owners, Salim Said and Aimee Bock, were convicted in the massive Feeding Our Future case, which involved the theft of approximately $250 million from a federal child nutrition program.
Federal prosecutors said the scheme relied on false meal claims submitted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Omar has not been charged in connection with the case and has denied any wrongdoing.
The Feeding Our Future scandal has become one of the largest pandemic-era fraud cases in U.S. history and has fueled bipartisan calls for tighter oversight of federal aid programs.
On January 5, President Donald Trump said his administration would move aggressively to cut off federal funding tied to what he described as entrenched fraud and corruption in Democrat-controlled states, including Minnesota, California, and Illinois. Trump said federal dollars would no longer flow to programs that lack meaningful accountability or oversight.
The House Oversight Committee has not yet announced a formal timeline for potential subpoenas or further actions involving Omar or her husband, but Comer signaled that the investigation is far from over.
